Ringside Chat: Heidi White's Back On The FEI Scene With A New Partner At Red Hills

Ten years ago, Heidi White was aiming for the FEI World Equestrian Games with her horse of a lifetime, Northern Spy. In the meantime, there's been some tragedy and a few horses that didn't work out. While it's taken her a while, now she's back at the FEI levels with another rising star.

Fredericks Fights For First At Red Hills CIC**

Tallahassee, Fla. - March 13

Clayton Fredericks had quite the morning before his CIC** show jumping rounds this afternoon.

When his CIC* horse Subiaco stopped at a double combination, Fredericks was thrown onto his neck and busted his chin open. After re-presenting, the gelding stopped again, and they were eliminated.

One bloodied white shirt, six stitches and four staples in his chin later, he headed into show jumping in third place on FE Money Made and had a rail. Then the pressure was on with the leader, FE Bowman.

Pint-sized Paint Sky Blue Dakota Tackles Red Hills CIC*

Scan the entry list for the CIC* at Red Hills and you’ll see various purpose-bred or imported horses—Fernhills, Cooleys, FEs and more.

Watch them go, and they’re pretty amazing. But Sophia Middlebrook will tell you Sky Blue Dakota is just as amazing, though she never quite expected the Paint gelding to be tackling the notoriously tough cross-country course at Red Hills.

Tallahassee, Fla.—March 12

Fernhill Fugitive has always been a solid campaigner for Phillip Dutton, but he may have moved up a few places in his string after his brilliant weekend at Red Hills.

The pair were second to Hannah Sue Burnett and Harbour Pilot after dressage, but show jumped clear this morning over Fuzzy Mayo’s track, then proceeded to put in the fastest cross-country time over Mike Etherington-Smith’s new CIC*** track to seal the win.

It’s been more than a year since Hannah Sue Burnett and Harbour Pilot cantered down the center line together, but they came out with a bang at the Red Hills International Horse Trials, scoring a 40.4 to lead the CIC***.

Phillip Dutton and four-star veteran Fernhill Fugitive are second with a 42.4, while Jennie Brannigan and Catalina, who held the lead for much of the afternoon, are third on 44.4.

Kieffer Captures Red Hills CIC***

March 8—Tallahassee, Fla.

You might not have bet on Czechmate to win the CIC*** at Red Hills this weekend based on the entry list, but the 9-year-old Czech Warmblood stepped up to the plate for Lauren Kieffer and came home with the win in his first CIC*** after jumping a double clear round over Fuzzy Mayo’s show jumping track.

“He’s just always been a really competitive horse, but it’s certainly nice when five years later he’s still doing it,” said Kieffer, who’s brought “Czechy” along since he was 4 for owners Courtney and Kylie Ramsay.
