Horse Community Raises Big Bucks For Dogs And Cats

Despite the gloomy weather, hundreds of horse and dog lovers braved the elements to show their support for homeless pets at the “Ride for the Animals presented by Finish Line Feed” charity horse show on January 19, 2013. The event raised $3,320 for the Humane Society of Broward County through equestrian competitions, dog contests and competitive games for humans. The event, which is part of the popular Heritage Horse Show series, was held at the Plantation Equestrian Center.

CANTER-Mid Atlantic’s Free Online Sales Listings Transitioned 350 Ex-Racehorses Into Second Careers

CANTER Mid-Atlantic is celebrating a milestone year for transitioning ex-racehorses into second careers through its free online sales listings.  The online sales website served nearly 150 trainers at six racetracks in 2012 who listed 350 racehorses nearing the end of their racing careers.

“It’s a huge benefit,” said Tim Tullock, trainer with horses stabled at Laurel Park Race Track, Laurel, MD.  “It’s very hard to find good homes for our horses and CANTER Mid-Atlantic and its volunteers provide an invaluable service.”

Poignant Documentary Chronicles Injured Jockey Jake Chalfin's Courage

HRTV (R), The Network for Horse Sports, will premiere a documentary chronicling a poignant story of courage and determination in the world of steeplechase racing, titled Chasing: A Steeplechase Story, which will air on Sunday, Jan. 27 at 8 p.m. ET.

The half-hour unveiling will take a special look at former steeplechase jockey, Jake Chalfin, whose promising career in the saddle ended when he was paralyzed from a fall during a race at the Blue Ridge Point-to-Point Races in Virginia in September, 2010.
