A Day To Remember

Longtime huntsmen recall their most memorable days in the field.

No day of foxhunting is complete without a round of good stories told at the hunt breakfast. And the old adage, “there are no bad days hunting,” is one of the reasons that foxhunters keep going back for more. But some days stand out, even to those who live their lives in the hunt field.

Brazos Valley Hunt (Texas) MFH and huntsman Sandy Dixon, who hunts primarily American hounds, readily recalled a day last year that was filled with quarry.

Rombout Hunt Celebrates Their 75th Opening Meet

The gloomy upstate New York skies couldn't overshadow the opening meet of the 75th anniversary of the Rombout Hunt on Oct. 2. Some 45 riders, including 15 juniors from 6 to 15, assembled at Jt.-MFH Suzie Cannavino's Gone Away Farm in Hyde Park to celebrate.

The East Aurora Hunt: Gone But Not Forgotten

The New York hunt had a rich history that continues today in South Carolina.

If one listens carefully as the Aiken Hounds (S.C.) move off, the notes ascending from the huntsman’s sterling silver horn can be heard in another time and place.

The horn, which was handed down through generations, is the same that blew for the East Aurora (N.Y.) hounds in the early 20th century, proving yet again that in the timeless tradition of foxhunting, history often repeats itself.

Potomac Jefferson Inaugurated At Virginia Hound Show


The flawless and distinctive American foxhound Potomac Jefferson ’05 claimed the grand champion title at the end of a long, hot, humid day at the 60th annual Virginia Hound Show held at Morven Park, Leesburg, Va., on May 26.

The victory was especially sweet as it had eluded him last year, when he was named as reserve grand champion.

The Centennial Hound Show Crowned The Champions Of Champions

From a field of 66 outstanding candidates, eight exemplary foxhounds were selected as the best representatives of their breed at the Centennial Championship Hound Show, held on May 27 in Leesburg, Va.

The champion dogs and bitches in each breed category—American, Penn-Marydel, English and Crossbred—from each of the Foxhound Club of North America sanctioned hound shows across the nation came together in a memorable contest. They represented the crème de la crème of the breeding programs of recognized foxhunts on the continent.

MFHA Centennial Closing Left Many Moments To Remember

The MFHA Centennial closing ceremony, held on the grounds of the Museum of Hunting and Hounds in Leesburg, Va., was filled with memories and laced with symbolic gestures. It capped a weekend of Centennial celebration festivities, May 25-27.

The ceremony was the official end of a year of events designed to draw foxhunters from across North America together and to raise money to protect the course of the sport in the future.

Vincent Tartaglia Concludes A Lifetime With Horse And Hounds

he finality of it has at last hit home. Vincent Tartaglia, the sometimes feisty but always brilliant huntsman who achieved national stature in his profession, retired his horn after more than 25 years with the Rombout Hunt (N.Y.).

On Dec. 2, he said good night to the hunting faithful one last time at a dinner honoring him in Hyde Park, N.Y.
