The American Gold Cup trophy has legendary names like Michael Matz, Beezie Madden and Rodney Jenkins engraved on it, and each year some of the country’s top riders covet the cup.

But this year, two young riders on their way up the ranks made a real splash at the competition. Devin Ryan, showing Eddie Blue in the horse’s first World Cup qualifying class, outran reigning Longines FEI World Cup Final champion McLain Ward to take the win in the $216,000 Longines FEI World Cup Qualifier of New York and be the next name engraved on the American Gold Cup trophy.
