Virginia Horse Auctions Cancelled, New EHV-1 Test Results In

Virginia State Veterinarian Richard Wilkes announced on Feb. 28 that all public horse sales and auctions throughout Virginia are cancelled, effective immediately. The cancellation is statewide, and the ban will remain in effect until Monday March 5 unless extended by Wilkes.

So far five horses have tested positive for EHV-1 in this most recent outbreak. Two of those are at the Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center in Leesburg, Va. One horse was euthanized at the EMC Feb. 13 for an unrelated disease, one was euthanized in Maryland and the fifth is currently improving at Lynefield Farm in Hillsboro, Va.

Wilkes is currently awaiting pending test results from one horse in Rixeyville, Va. Two test results on horses showing EHV-1 symptoms from Warrenton and Casanova, Va. have come back negative.

In Maryland, 16 more negative test results have come back on horses from farms with hold orders for a total of 28 negative tests and one positive on the horse that was euthanized. As a result of the negative tests, eight of 13 properties are being fully released from hold orders; three more properties have "conditional or partial" releases prohibiting individual horses from leaving the property; one property in Carroll County is still under a hold order pending test results; and one property remains under quarantine due to the positive test result. There are no horses at the quarantined facility showing any symptoms of EHV-1.
