Two New Jersey Farms Quarantined For EHV-1

The New Jersey Department of Agriculture announced the quarantine of a second New Jersey farm on April 15 after an outbreak of equine herpes virus type 1 in the Colts Neck area.

The first case of EHV-1 was discovered at Overbrook Farm where a veterinarian was treating a sick filly. The horse was euthanized on April 13 after she didn’t respond to treatment. Five other horses at the same location were also infected but are recovering.

The New Jersey Department of Agriculture announced the quarantine of a second New Jersey farm on April 15 after an outbreak of equine herpes virus type 1 in the Colts Neck area.

The first case of EHV-1 was discovered at Overbrook Farm where a veterinarian was treating a sick filly. The horse was euthanized on April 13 after she didn’t respond to treatment. Five other horses at the same location were also infected but are recovering. 

The NJDA initiated a search to determine the extent of the outbreak in the area. Officials also quarantined Tourelay Farm, although no cases of EHV-1 have been reported there at this time.

Each farm’s quarantine is set for a tentative 21 days, unless other cases of the virus are discovered.

The presence of EHV-1 in New Jersey arrived only weeks after two cases were reported at Cornell Equine Hospital (N.Y.)
