Outpouring of Support Continues for Local Man Paralyzed in Steeplechase Event

Close friends, acquaintances and members of the local community have rallied together to help Jake Chalfin, a 32-year-old Unionville man who was paralyzed from the chest down as a result of a fall at the Blue Ridge Point to Point in September 2010.

Following a stay at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he endured an eight-hour surgery to stabilize his spine, a hopeful and determined Chalfin entered the Magee Rehabilitation Hospital in Philadelphia.  There, he has been working very hard to regain his strength and learn how to adapt to life in a wheelchair. Though he is determined to walk again, he cannot do it alone.

To help Chalfin meet the significant long-term expenses associated with his special needs, which have been estimated to exceed $1 million, the Jake Chalfin Beneficiary Trust has been established.

To date, Chasin’ for Chalfin, the committee which has spearheaded the fundraising efforts, has raised approximately $125,000.00 through the sale of T-shirts and wristbands, donations from individuals, igive.com, and a kickoff gala event called Stealin’ the Start, which was held on December 4, 2010.  The next event, a day of fox hunting, will be hosted by the Cheshire Foxhounds on Saturday, December 18, 2010.  All proceeds will benefit Chalfin, who was an avid foxhunter in their field.

Future events to benefit Chalfin are currently being planned and will be announced shortly.  To follow Chalfin’s progress, learn about upcoming events, or get information about how to make a donation, visit www.chasinforchalfin.com
