A Jan. 21 fire that killed all 22 horses boarded at Heritage Acres in Lafayette is still under investigation, according to New Jersey’s Star-Ledger.
Art, 77, and Betty Hahn, 73, were the owners of the Sussex county boarding facility, which housed a mix of reining, dressage and jumper horses. State police arrived at the scene by 1:40 a.m., but the 20-year-old barn was already completely engulfed by flames. The structure was destroyed within the following hour. No hay or fuel was said to be stored in the barn, and the owners didn’t know of any wiring problems. Officials are still conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire.
Sussex County Fire Marshal Joseph Inga told the Star-Ledger, “The cause of the fire is still undetermined at this point. It’s just a very unfortunate incident.”
The barn was not insured and, according to the Star-Ledger, the owners plan on selling the property once the investigation is complete. The Hahns had owned the property for over four decades.
