New Award Honors Dedication To Improve Horse Welfare

The U.S. Equestrian Federation collaborated with The EQUUS Foundation to create an award with the goal of celebrating humanitarian achievements made by a member of the equestrian world.  The EQUUS Foundation Humanitarian Award will be presented during the USEF Pegasus Awards Dinner and Annual Meeting this January in Louisville, Ky.

The recipient will be chosen based on his or her selfless dedication to improve horse welfare and promote the public’s appreciation and respect for horses.  The award will pay tribute to individuals who strive to enhance equine quality of life and honor horses not only as athletes, but also as aides to the general public. The EQUUS Foundation will provide a $5,000 grant to the equestrian or horse-related charity of the recipient’s choice.

Any member of the equestrian community may nominate an individual and receive nomination forms from the USEF.  The following information must be provided to nominate an individual:  A written statement explaining why the individual is worthy of the award; biographical information of the nominee; detailed examples of their philanthropic work and written testimonials or letters by those who have been affected by the nominee’s contributions.  The USEF will also accept any additional materials deemed worthy by the nominator.

Corporations, organizations and businesses are not eligible for the award, but will be considered on a case-by-case basis under exceptional circumstances and may make nominations. Nominations will be accepted Sept. 8-Nov. 9 by U.S. mail or via the USEF website.

Individuals employed full-time by a company with the sole purpose of achieving philanthropic ends similar to those expressed by the Humanitarian Award will only be considered if their contributions are widely viewed as beyond their required duty.  Posthumous nominees will not be accepted.
