At almost 20 months old, Nox Martin—son of four-star eventer Boyd Martin and dressage rider Silva Martin—isn’t talking yet, but he’s clearly got one word down pat—Eddie, the name of his pet goat.
Eddie arrived at the Martin’s Pennsylvania farm to keep a young horse company while most of the stables were empty over winter. But when the Nigerian Dwarf bonded with Nox, his owner Mary Hazzard made a gift of him to the Martins.
Here, equipped with a matching raincoat stitched by Silva’s friend, Cheryl Griffith, Eddie gives Nox a lesson in pseudo-horsemanship while Silva laughs in the background.
“When Eddie doesn’t walk forward first he pulls, then he goes behind him and pushes,” Silva said with a laugh. “It’s funny because Eddie won’t walk at all with any grown-up—he’ll only walk with Nox.
“Every morning Nox walks out of the house and screams, ‘Eddie! Eddie! Eddie!’ It’s a love relationship with those two.”
