Horse Euthanized At Marion duPont Equine Medical Center

One of the horses displaying neurologic symptoms at the Marion duPont Equine Medical Center was euthanized this morning, March 1.

Although the horse’s neurologic symptoms were improving, it developed severe colic and diarrhea overnight, conditions that are unrelated to EHV-1.  Veterinarians at the EMC are still awaiting EHV-1 test results on this horse, as well as one other who is displaying neurologic symptoms.  Two more horses currently at the EMC have tested positive for the virus, and a third horse that tested positive was euthanized Feb. 13 for an unrelated disease.

Test results have come back on a horse stabled in Rixeyville, Va.  The horse tested negative for EHV-1. The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is still waiting for one more test to come back on a horse stabled in Bluemont, Va.

Two Virginia state parks, Sky Meadows and Shenandoah River, will be closed to horses until March 12.
