Three cases of equine herpes virus (EHV-1) have been confirmed in Orange County, Calif., according to a statement from the California Department of Food and Agriculture.

On Jan. 11, a gelding residing on a large multi-discipline facility with no movement of horses on or off the property tested positive for the virus. Testing confirmed on Jan. 12 that two additional horses on the same farm were EHV-1-positive. All three horses have been isolated and quarantined on the farm and are receiving veterinary attention. No additional cases have been confirmed at this time, and all other horses residing on the premises are being closely monitored for signs of disease.

Admission and discharge restrictions put into place on Jan. 4 after a mare was admitted and tested positive for the neurologic form of EHV-1 were lifted Jan. 12 at the North Carolina State University Equine and Farm Animal Veterinary Center, according to a statement on the school’s website.

“Horses in the Center when the mare entered the isolation unit are being discharged and new outpatient and elective cases will be accepted,” the statement said. “Emergency cases admitted during the past week will continue to be hospitalized for a total of seven days. Strict biosecurity measures will continue while the mare remains in the separate isolation facility.”

No other horses were exposed to the virus at the hospital, and no updates on the affected horse’s condition were provided in the statement.

Although it’s not transmissible to humans, EHV-1 is highly contagious among horses, and it is generally passed from horse to horse via aerosol transmission. The disease can cause a variety of ailments in equines, including rhinopneumonitis, abortion in broodmares and neurologic problems.
