The Transitioning Subcommittee of the American Association of Equine Practitioners Racing Committee has created a set of guidelines to assist veterinarians, adoption groups and new owners as they introduce their off-the-track Thoroughbreds into safe and successful second careers.
“The AAEP is pleased to assist and is proud of the many veterinarians and adoption groups who are committed to helping racehorses enjoy new careers,” said William A. Moyer, DVM, AAEP’s current president. “The guide is intended to be a resource to enhance decision making in the best interest of the horse.”

Titled “Transitioning the Retired Racehorse: Guidelines for Equine Practitioners, Adoption Organizations and Horse Owners” and posted on the AAEP website, the document details what to expect when working with retired racehorses and possible physical challenges they might face. The literature also includes estimated cost-of-care data provided by the Communication Alliance to Network Thoroughbred Ex-Racehorses, an organization that promotes the welfare of Thoroughbreds as they start second careers after their racing campaigns.
